Pulled this out of the drum on my rear drivers side brake on the VW. Not exactly sure what this is but I think it’s maybe a part of the e-brake line.

It was rattling and whining something fierce so I fished it out (magnets, how do they work) and around the same time the ebrake was acting funny. I guess I know what I am doing on my days off.

Hmmm... the smaller end looks like its notched to take some kind of retaining clip. No clue, but I’m glad you got it out of there!

Looks like it could be a pin that helps locate the shoe to the backing plate.. I would pull the drum and make sure it’s not. Brake failure is not a joke

This. It looks like drum brake hardware which really shouldn’t fall out

I fear you may be right about the relation to the e-brake. Something like this possibly?

Yeah that’s gotta be it. I’ll pull off the drum tomorrow and see what’s going on

I'm in the parts biz, I love the "what the heck is this" questions. Granted I'm not sure what kind of vw you are working on. Might not be that exact pin, but I'm sure it's something similar.

It was actually the retaining pin that holds the bolt in that broke. Fixing it today

it’s odd to me that so many usdm cars have them, even here in the UK where the insurance cartels strangle options for young drivers I’ve only owned one car with them. It was a 1988 VW Polo 1.3l, I think only the base spec sub compacts have them now.
